Rosalind Howard was the daughter of Edward Stanley, 2nd Baron Stanley of Alderley.
She married George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle, with whom she'd six sons and five daughters.
They moved in the pre-Raphaelite artistic and Liberal political circles; Lord Carlisle was an active Liberal MP from 1879.
